Culture

One of Richibucto’s most prized possessions is without a doubt its cultural diversity. Many artists and crafters have chosen to live in this region to pursue their art or craft.

What most characterizes Richibucto is its linguistic diversity

. Nowhere else will you find three cultures as rich as the French, English and Mi’kmaq. While strolling across town, it is common to hear these three languages throughout the many conversations.

The history of Richibucto is rich with legends that show the harmony that exists between the Acadians, the Mi’kmaqs and the English. According to certain historians, many words

used in spoken Acadian come from the Mi’kmaq language and vice-versa for spoken Mi’kmaq.

You will quickly realize the importance of these three cultures from your first visit in Richibucto… the town’s signs welcome you in three languages. With the Banner Festival, we can also discover the artistic wealth represented by the three participating communities: Richibucto, Rexton and Saint-Louis-de-Kent, and their respective culture.

Because of an agreement signed between town council and the renowned Acadian artist, Donald McGraw, the town of Richibucto has acquired the Great Chiefs Collection, a series of 12 paintings, entitled “The Great Spirit, A Circle of Lifeâ€, for a period of forty (40) years. The town and the artist share the same vision and passion for First Nations. As stated by the artist, ““This circle of chiefs is meant to be a symbol of respect and recognition of Aboriginal people and my hope is that this work will serve to value and promote the human dignity of First Nations peoples and thus enable us to know each other betterâ€.
