| Richibucto
has always been considered the Kent region’s business
centre. For that matter, it was the county town (Shiretown)
of Kent County in matters of health, education, justice and
social aid until 1966. The jurisdiction of the county was
assumed by 15 district councilors until the time came for
the province of New Brunswick to the overall management and
abolish jurisdiction by the county.
Today,
Richibucto is the centre of commerce and business in North
and Central Kent region, serving a target market of over 12,000
inhabitants. The various industries, businesses and governments
located within the municipality employs no less than 1,600
people.
The
retail business and the food and lodging establishments display
more and more franchise and chain banners, a sure sign of
effervescence in this sector. Over and above the health, legal
and financial services being offered, the municipality has
an industrial park that centers around manufacturing, having
as one of its pillars such leaders as The Imperial Manufacturing
Group, the St-Ignace Wood Truss. The Richibucto Wharf plays
a role in the local economy with its impressive fleet of some
84 commercial fishing boats.
Operating
with a budget of 1.3 million dollars and with assets of 5.1
million dollars (excluding sewage and aqueduct), the municipality
of Richibucto has been able to wisely invest in community
infrastructures. In fact, along with the usual infrastructures
such as Fire Department, Town Hall, Transportation, the town
is also the owner of an arena, a library, a municipal camping
ground. It also invests in the development of its riverbanks
to serve its citizens and tourists in general.
